After World War 2, much of Europe was in ruins from being bombed. The Marshall Plan gave assistance for the rebuilding of factories to provide people with jobs to get people back to work. The factories were rebuilt in Western Europe and that area became prosperous.
Eastern Europe was occupied by Russia. No Marshall Plan occurred in Eastern Europe. That area never recovered from World War 2.

With this assistance, Europe was able to come back and enter the last half of the 20th century as modern, industrialized countries.

First and foremost, it ensured that many European (and other) nations that had been devastated by the conflict would not sink into social and economic chaos: their recovery (and a rather rapid one, at that) was guaranteed. Second, it created goodwill towards the United States among European nations and even paved the way for formal alliances, which was increasingly necessary in light of the expansionist policies of the Soviet Union.
