This question is still argued today. The North wanted to preserve the Union and considered the secession of the South as illegal. Emotions also ran high because of the moral controversy of slavery. The South seceded from the Union because of economic reasons stemming from international debts incurred earlier in the formation of the United States and state's rights. The economy was agriculture depending on cheap or free labor so, slavery was an issue as well.
It is this author's opinion that any conflict, war, is fought for reasons that are different for each side.
