Riel was from Manitoba, fought for the rights of the locals, died for the cause, has been vilified ever since by Canada, and lionized as a great martyr by those with the deep historical roots in Western Canada.

Standing up to Canada. His land and colony, The Red River Colony, was with many others purchased by Canada from the Hudson Bay Company. Canada acted like the land was empty of people, which is always best when colonising new lands.

Riel was one of the leaders of the local government in today's Manitoba. Canada was forced to negotiate with the locals creating the province of Manitoba. Canada also used troops to do some of the negotiating so Riel and others fled to the States.

But Canada had little intention of actually following through with the promises made when they created Manitoba and things got much worst for many locals, in particular the Indians and Metis.

So Riel returned a few years later and helped in another rebellion. That one killed many more people and saw Riel arrested.

He was hanged by Canada for treason.
