You mean off their lands, out of their homes, away from the place they had always known? Here are some reasons:

  • There were no moving trucks back then. They could only take what they could carry.
  • In many cases they were force-marched with not enough food to last the journey. Many died along the way.
  • They had to move away from where their families and ancestors were buried, and those connections were important to them.
  • The places they were moved to were worse than where they had been. The reservations were often desert-like and barren, compared to the rich, lush land they were used to. In many cases, they didn't know how to survive on the new land. The same plants didn't grow on that land, and very few trees.
  • There were not the same animals to hunt, and in some cases they depended on those animals for food, shelter, *and* clothing.
  • Throughout the whole thing, they were being forced because their land had been stolen. It is always harder to do something when you are being forced into it, rather than choosing it yourself, and it is also very hard to accept injustice, even when you know you currently have no other choice.

Why were many Native Americans on the east coast reluctant to move west?

The U.S. Settlers were mean to the Native Americans and forced them to move to reservation land where there was no buffalo to hunt and the hunters would have to move out of the reservations to hunt for the buffalo for food, clothing and tools. Long ago before the U.S. Settlers came to America, the Native Americans would follow the buffalo where ever they go to hunt for the things they will need to survive because the buffalo was their sacred animal
