Because themselves with little interference. But in the 1760's, Britain began to tighten their control over the colonies.
After the french and Indian war, Britain lost lots of money, so Britain thought the colonists should pay their share. They were mad not only it was a lot of money to pay, they were taxed on things they really needed and enjoyed, like tea, sugar, and legal documents. They also made them house and feed the British soldiers (red-coats) and they closed the Boston harbor controlling trade. The colonists were furious. They said, "no taxation without representation!" In April 1775, war broke out between the colonists and Britain. The American revolution had begun.

Because they were paying taxes...?
They were upset about being taxed without proper representation in the British Parliament. So the rallying call became "No taxation without representation."
The Government also taxed pretty much everything, from playing cards to tabbacco to alchohol to stamps. Basically, they weren't allowed to have a really fun Poker night without being desimated by taxes.
They hated British taxes because the British taxed one item that the American colonists loved: tea. That is how it lead to the Boston tea party. The Boston tea party is when they dumped the tea into the Boston harbor.
The American colonists were British citizens, but they were denied the right to have representatives in the British government - a guaranteed right of those citizens still residing in England. American colonists were unhappy because no Americans participated in the legislative body (the British Parliament) that enacted the taxes.
The colonists were mad about paying British taxes because the they thought it was unfair.

Because they were being taxed immensely on common goods.
These taxes upset the people who have to pay the taxes and those intelligent enough to know that even those who don't have to pay the taxes directly still end up paying in the form of price increases on everything that they buy in stores, groceries, and everything else that they purchase.
One effect of the new British taxes on colonist were protests.
