For a private practitioner, the downsides to being a veterinarian typically include loss of "home time" due to emergencies, long hours at the clinic and being asked questions by the general public any time, any place. It can be emotionally draining as well, particularly when you have to euthanize animals that you have been treating for 15 years. In most instances, you will never be a millionaire (there are some exceptions), so while you can make ends meet you won't be living like a doctor unless you are very frugal.
