When should puppys have their shots?

Like all puppies, pit bull puppies should be vaccinated against parvovirus, coronavirus and distemper (it's a single shot) at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks of age. They should also receive their first rabies vaccination at 16 weeks of age.

Only a vet with your dog's complete medical history can determine which vaccines should be given and when they'll be most effective. In general, however, shots begin when your dog is 4 to 6 weeks old and will continue until she's more than 16 weeks of age. Many of the most important vaccines can be given together, in what's often called the DHLPP vaccine. Vaccinations are a very important part of keeping your puppy healthy, so it's great that you're thinking about it already!

Some breeders give puppies a set of shots before they ever go to their new home - but this DOES NOT MEAN that the puppy is fully vaccinated. When puppies are vaccinated early, the vaccines are NOT fully effective and will not be able to fully protect your pup from some very scary diseases.

So basically, 8-12 weeks is thought by many to be the best time to start a puppy's shots! It can be a bit confusing, so call your vet and ask for more information!

You should give your Pitbull puppy its first vaccinations at the age of 7 or 8 weeks. Repeat at 10 weeks, then again at 13 weeks, then last one at 16 weeks along with the Rabies vaccination at around 4-5 months. Check with your Veterinarian as you should have your puppy checked out by your local Vet. You should also bring in a fecal sample to your Vet to have your pet checked for internal parasites. You would not want to give just a Parvo vaccination, but the combination vaccine, Distemper, Parainfluenza, Hepatitis, etc. or also known as DHLP/Parvo vaccine. Be sure to booster this vaccine yearly. Don't forget about heartworm prevention too, ask your Vet. Be sure to feed a good name of dog food, not a cheap store brand.
