There are a few ways to get Wonderfuls.
-Win a festival. If you get first place in any of the yearly festivals you will win a Wonderful.
-Reach the bottom floor of the mine (floor 255) on an odd amount (first time you get a Wonderful, the second time you get a recipe, third time you get a Wonderful again, and so on). You also must meet the Harvest Goddess first otherwise you get nothing.
-During Winter Chen might have Wonderfuls for sale. If your invisible Farm Degree points ends in five he will have a Wonderful for sale. Since there is no way to see your amount of Farm Degree points it is hard to tell if it ends in five or not.

Once you get a yellow wonderful, go to Chen's shop when Charlie is there. Talk to Charlie and select your hammer. Put the yellow wonderful onto your hammer. After that, Charlie will bring you to the large boulder at the back of your farm. You will break the boulder with your hammer and unlock the paddy fields! Always include the full title when asking a Harvest Moon question. Or if it is called just "Harvest Moon" include the system the game is for. I am guessing you are playing either Island of Happiness or Sunshine Island both for the DS. If you are, you must equip your Sickle with a Yellow Wonderful. Then just hold the button down to charge it. Make sure it is fully grown before you try to reap your Rice.

You can lower his Heart Color by giving him gifts he hates. His least favorite item is Carrot. But you do not need to lower his Heart Color to see the Yellow Heart Event. It will still work even if you have an Orange or Red Heart Color.
