Practice, practice, practice. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect (well, almost perfect). Also, try to find your best character and utilize that character.

Do multiple-hit moves, which is, for example, hitting a person once, kicking them into the air, and then hitting them off of the stage to lose a life. That was only one example, but it works if you have a light enough character (can be done with heavy characters, but very hard. There are many other ways of doing multiple-hit moves, too).

Match weight. If your brother is going to be Ganondorf, then choose a heavy character. If you choose a light character in this situation, one hit will send you flying, and a few more could send you down-and-out. Opposite weight matches are only recommended for experienced users.

The most important thing to do is analyze his style. If he does a lot of close-combat attacks, choose a medium to heavy weight character. Light characters would lose in close-combat (Falco is recommended). If he is a long range combat person who utilizes items, choose a medium to light weight character which can Dodge attacks with ease, but also work with close and long-range combat (Marth recommended). If he is an all-around combat person, choose a medium-weight character (Luigi recommended).
