Here are some tips for beating Thunderbird:

  • Try to have as many lives (1-ups/link dolls) as possible. There's one hidden in the palace, conveniently located on the way to Thunderbird. It's in the place where you're riding an elevator down and you come to a room where the left side has these towers with blue blobs on them rising out of the lava.
  • Have full magic and health when you start off. To do this, go to the hallway to the left of Thunderbird's chamber and you'll find some blocks. The first and last towers have red potions in them, but there's also a good chance that those red bird knight things will pop out instead. If that happens, run into the boss room and then quickly exit. keep on doing this until you get a red potion. Use it to fill your health, and then get the other.
  • When you get into the room, cast shield, jump, and reflect, but only if you have all the magic containers and level 8 magic (if you don't, cast these later if you have enough. You'll see what I'm talking about. PS, you're probably not going to have enough magic to cast heal anyway). These will all help you take less damage and make it easier to attack. Walk onto the blue floor and wait for Thunderbird to appear. Once he's fully onscreen, cast thunder to turn him blue and reveal his face. Your objective now is to hit his face until he's dead. Even with level 8 attack this will take many hits. (BEWARE! Upward and downward thrusts do not work. You have to hit him directly). And even with level 8 health, he still does loads of damage.
  • Keep your eyes on the fireballs and Dodge them. If you casted reflect, your shield will block them, but only if it hits the shield!
  • Try going to the other side of the room once you've hit him. He will follow you, giving you a chance to attack once he reaches you.
  • Be extremely careful, for as the fight goes on, he'll begin to move faster and shoot more fireballs.
  • Once you beat him, CONGRATULATE YOURSELF! He is a truly hard boss in a truly hard game. Best of all, if you die of loose all of your lives fighting the boss that follows, you won't have to beat him again! That is, if you remember to save your game when you shut it off. However, if you die and want to continue playing, DON'T PRESS SAVE! If you press continue, you'll be at the entrance to the palace instead of where you start the game when you first turn it on (in the princess's room).

I sure hope that extensive answer helps!
