you have to have wifi(wireless internet connection) in your home or near you.

You can also connect an ethernet cable to the PlayStation 3 From your cable Modem or from your router and this provides a better connection than the wireless G connection. What you can not do is use any method to connect to the internet by trying to use the PS3 USB port. The connection must be either WiFi or ethernet.
