Action Replay is a cheat engine.

On the PS2 version you had to enter the codes in manually (I believe this was the same for Xbox)

On DS you install (alternatively you can download) software on to your computer and then transfers the codes straight across. (PSP may also use this system however I'm unsure)
On other versions they must be entered in (or downloaded) and there are a few parts:

Game Code
This must be entered first and tells the Action Replay just what you are playing using a serial code embedded into the Game

Cheats
This is the main part, You must type in/copy and paste in some cases, a bunch of code that means very little to anyone other than the code writers. The name is often manual with these two

Cheat Groups
Occasionally you'll find that the Cheat Writers group together similar cheats, e.g. "Levelling Up cheats" or "Health Cheats".

All in one
With these groups you occasionally can only select one (similar to a radio button on your browser) these are often in cases when the codes do a similar thing for example "Always Walk", "Always Run" and "Always Sprint". This is purely to not confuse the engine and glitch the game.

Action Replay codes can be found on Code Junkies (link at the bottom)

This is the general system (Picture Created on 03/12/09)
