How do you make a metal pickax on mine craft?

To make a pickaxe in minecraft you must:

1) get logs

2) make it into wooden planks

3) make a crafting table using the inventory crafting square 1 wooden plank in all four.

4) make sticks out of 2 of the wooden planks in the crafting table by doing this

The material used in the top 3 squares in the crafting table can be other things such as stone and iron.

Assuming you already have a crafting table (but if you don't you just cut down a tree and make the logs into planks. Then you put four planks in to fill up the little crafting area in you inventory) and wooden planks, you first have to make the planks into sticks (which are made by putting two planks ontop of each other in the crafting table). Then you put one stick in the bottom middle slot and your choice of material ( wooden planks, cobblestone, iron, gold, diamond) in the two other middle slots and then you get a sword. To make a pickaxe you have to put a stick in the two lower middle slots and your choice of material in the top three slots and then you have your pickaxe.
