First, you will need to collect clay from swamps or rivers using any kind of shovel. Clay blocks are light gray and make a gravel sound when stepped on or hit. When you collect some clay, smelt them into a furnace to turn them into a Brick. Gathering about at least four, you can take them to the Crafting Table or use the four slots in your inventory to craft them into Bricks. Just simply make a small square (filling up the four slots in the inventory) and it'll make them into one Bricks block.
Bricks can only be made into Brick Blocks, Stairs and Slabs.

No you cannot. You can only get Bricks. On Beta 1.5_01 Clay is cooked in a Furnace to make Bricks which are formed into Brick Blocks.
