1) Background applications.
2) The mod loader you are using, if required. (Forge is known to be a bit of a memory hog.)
3) The age of your machine.
4) Being below, meeting or surpassing system requirements to play minecraft.
The more memory/RAM your machine has, the better the performance. Pay attention to background programs, ending any unnecessary programs to stop them from interfering with Minecraft while it's running, but be sure you know what can be stopped safely.
