Yes, they can, and these friends would have taken you in could find themselves facing charges for it (harboring a runaway, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, etc). Most states do not have established laws that relate to such an issue. In this situation it is likely the minor's parents would have to obtain an order of requisition to have the minor returned to their custody. If the minor is not living in a environment that could be defined as unsuitable and/or dangerous the police will not get involved w/o the cited court order. It is true however, that adults who allow a minor to reside in their home knowing the minor's parents or guardian objects can be subject to criminal penalties and/or civil action.
When Barack Obama still lived in Chicago, his daughters attended the University of Chicago's Lab School. Mr. Obama used to teach there, and his wife Michelle was a VP of Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago. But since he became president, the two girls attend the Sidwell Friends School in Washington DC.
Betsy did attend school, but it was a different school. She attended a school that was different than ours. It was a Quaker school, a FRIENDS QUAKER SCHOOL. I'm not sure where, but I THINK that it was at a rich family's house who were also Quakers. Remember, I THINK. I searched some on books though...
