In my very personal oppinion it is, yes. In fact, I think the whole thing is pure genious. I find it to be the last of the video gaming consoles that were visually not developed enough to be able to sell a game purely on graphics (graphics were pure bonuses), and thus you simply had to make a good game to sell any cartridges. This brought forth games like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (and Majora's Mask), Super Mario 64, Super Mario Kart (perhaps some of the best fun you can have with a couple of friends in front of a TV screen), etc. etc.
Less simply was more, and if you're asking because you're considering getting one - do get one. Now.
in my opinion. It is.

Banjo Kazooie. greatest game not just for n64 but of all time
The N64 is most important to our society because it was the first 3D gaming console ever made for home entertainment purposes. The N64 took games from NES and Super NES and turned them from 2D into 3D, greatly changing the gameplay and game experience for everyone. The N64 essentially was the springboard for Xbox and Play Station when referring to 3D gaming. .j.
