No they can not go into dsi XL or dsi. There is a possibility that the system will break. But there is a dsi or dsi XL TTDS like chips.

If I don't have a dsi would you recommend getting a dsi XL?
You'd only get the DSI for the camera,sound studio and the flipnote studio.But if you have TTDS it somehow doesn't work:'(.You can only use games for the DS for the DSI,not gameboy games either because you can play gameboy games on the DS.(shame). Me personaly would recomend a Dsi XL because it has games stored already inside it and it is the same of a dsi but larger
