I would Suggest you play the previous games but you don't have to. All Final Fantasy games ( except X and X2) have a differant story completely independent of the others. the only thing that will be the same is a couple of characters Names (eg Cid, Wedge and Biggs).
If your going to play FFX2 then i suggest you play X as it is a sequal.
