Visit other sims by walking outside of your house, going to others' houses, community lots etc. The difference between Sims 3 and previous games is that there is no loading screen for when you visit another lot.

Ive had the same problem. If it shows up a black screen, but you can see the bottom bar, wait a little bit, then press ctrl+alt+delete and click Task Manager. you should see a blue screen and the sims will play if u wait a bit while it is loading in that blue screen.

This happened in my game too but it was far worse. That usually means the CD you have for the game is scratched or you should adjust the graphic settings. But in case the CD is scratched just get a new game.
