There are two main Mushroom Pikmin glitches:If Pikmin happen to be knocked down as soon as the Puffstool's spores hit them, they will turn into Mushroom Pikmin but will still attack the Puffstool. They cannot be called back and may turn into regular Mushroom Pikmin. If you can call Pikmin the exact moment when they are hit with the Puffstool's spores, they will turn into Mushroom Pikmin but will be completely under your control. These Pikmin will still attack normal Pikmin.
You have to leave Pikmin idle by a Puffstool and call them at the exact moment they are hit by the Puffstool's spores. This requires perfect timing. Be careful, as Mushroom Pikmin will attack any other kinds of Pikmin.
The easiest way to get white and purple Pikmin is to go into easy caves, find the Candypop Buds and transform Pikmin, then get out. Keep in mind that Candypop Buds do not reappear in the same day after leaving a cavern. Emergence Cave in the Valley of Repose is best for purple Pikmin, and the White Flower Garden in the Awakening Wood is best for whites. Relatively easy caverns that can be used to get white and purple Pikmin are the Snagret Hole in the Valley of Repose and the Citadel of Spiders in the Perplexing Pool.

In the first game, the yellow Onion is in the second area, the Forest of Hope. Take enough Red Pikmin to defeat the Bulborb north of where you start out. Then, knock down the wall and kill the Bulborbs, dismiss the red Pikmin, and go north. You should see a darkish yellow colored Onion in the ground. Approach it, and it will turn bright yellow and rise out of the ground, and produce a single Yellow Pikmin sprout which you can then multiply. In the second game, the yellow Onion is visible immediately upon entering the third area, the Perplexing Pool, along with a few wild Yellow Pikmin. You will need Red and White Pikmin to reach them. First, head around the side of the stump where you see the Onion, where you'll find a scale puzzle. Once you get passed that, you'll see that the only way to where the Onion is has a wall raised with poison generators beneath it, and a Fiery Bulblax blocking the way to that wall. Use your Red Pikmin to kill it, and then use your White Pikmin to break down the gate and disable the poison generators. After that, all you'll need to do is whistle the wild Yellows. In the third game, Brittany finds the yellow Onion immediately upon entering the third area, the Distant Tundra. She'll wind up in a cave where she'll find two Yellow Pikmin trying to light a light bulb, and three Pikmin sprouts in the ground. With all five, the light bulb will light, and the Onion will bloom and rise from the ground. Within the cave, there are enough pellets to generate twenty more Yellow Pikmin, for a maximum total of 25; you will need at least twenty to open the way out of the cave.

All five original pikmin have been confirmed by Mr. Miyamoto. In addition, as you have probably already seen,, are the rock pikmin. These, despite what people have been saying, are not like purple pikmin at all. Really the only similarity is they give a little umph when landing on an enemy, and even then, they attack by repeatedly throwing themselves at the enemy instead of latching on, and don't have the possibility of making the enemy dizzy, like the purple. A flying pink pikmin with blue eyes can be seen in the trailer for a brief moment at the beginning and end. It doesn't really give you a clear view, though. When confronted about it, Nintendo said they couldn't confirm nor deny the pink pikmin. They did, however, confirm that new unannounced pikmin would be seen later in the game.
