What are the advantages and disadvantages of peninsula layout?

In the past, peninsulas were great for exploration into unexplored continents or to trade with other countries. Because there is so much ocean off the long coastline, the land would have fertile soil and there would be a good business for fishing and trade. Although with the open coastline, the the attacks on the country could be easily done. Another big disadvantage is that the area is more enclosed and there is only one way to travel to the mainland.
