Shame can be a powerful tool to increase the social disapproval of undesirable behavior. As an example, a politician who expresses an outrageous viewpoint can be shamed in an attempt to get him or her to consider adopting a less extreme point of view. A disadvantage of shame is that it requires effort by the person performing the shaming. It also has the potential to make the person who does the shaming get looked at less favorably by others who don't see anything wrong with the action that's causing the person to shame the other in the first place.
