Bananas can be dropped behind or thrown ahead. The player to drive into one will spin around and lose some speed. Bananas can be used to block oncoming Red Shells.

Green Koopa Shells fly in a straight line when thrown forward or backward. Green Shells collapse upon impact with players, bananas or other shells. They also bounce off walls a limited number of times.

Red Koopa Shells fly in a set pattern and will seek out the player ahead. Red Shells fly in a straight line when thrown backwards. Red Shells collapse upon impact with anything except Fake Item Boxes.

Bananas, Green and Red Shells can come in triple form with their same respective purposes. If you use a triple shell item the 3 shells will circle your kart, then you can throw them by pressing the X/L button.

Fake Item Boxes can be dropped behind or thrown ahead. They appear similar to real item boxes. Fake Item Boxes have no "?" mark and they don't move. They appear red on the map screen. Koopa Shells can pass right through Fake Item Boxes.

Blue Shells [or Spiny Shells] fly in the air to seek out the player in first. They explode upon impact with the leader, but other racers can be affected if they are too close. With good timing, a player can use a Mushroom or a power slide turbo boost to Dodge a Blue Shell.

Mushrooms give you a boost of speed. They are useful for taking off-road shortcuts, or simply getting ahead. Mushrooms can also come in triple form. They can also steal balloons from anyone you hit in battle mode, or coins in Mario Kart Wii battle mode.

Golden Mushrooms have a time limit rather than a usage limit. The time limit does not start if the player holds onto the item without using it. You get about 8 seconds from the first use.

Bloopers will squirt ink on all players (screens) that are ahead of the user. Real players affected by a Blooper can use the bottom screen to navitgate until the upper screen clears up. Computer players suffer slow down when affected by a Blooper and sometimes they even "wobble". Mushrooms, Stars, Bullet Bills or boost pads can clear away Blooper ink.

Lightning shrinks all other players and makes them drop their items. Shrunk players lose speed, but players closer to last will reform quicker. If you're lucky you may find a dropped Mushroom or Star somewhere on the course.

Boo, the ghost you all know and love. Boos can make the user invincible for a few seconds and allow them to pass through items or other players without harm. Boos also steal an item from another player. It also allows you to drive offroad without losing speed.

Bob-ombs can be thrown ahead or dropped behind. They explode when players are near by, when they are hit by another item or if they sit idle for too long.

Stars give the user invincibility and increase their speed for a short moment. Players using a star are safe from all other item attacks and they can knock around other players. Star power can be lost early if the user drives off a cliff.

Bullet Bills helps the user get ahead and also makes them invincible for the time being. It also steers for you but you can move a bit to the left or right. Other players will get knocked around if they are caught in a Bullet Bill's path. If you see one coming, get the hell away from the middle of the track.
