Television was first made available on the market in 1927, first in Britain and then in the US. The first models had tiny circular screens of only about 4" diameter, and could not transmit sound & vision simultaneously- sound for programmes had to be sent seperately by radio! (this problem was overcome by the following year). In those days, TV was very unusual and regarded as a great novelty- mostly, only wealthy people had TV sets, and programmes were only transmitted for a couple of hours each day. Domestic TV began to become more established by the late 1930s, when they began appearing in more homes across the Western world, and King George VI of England became the first monarch to have his Coronation televised- however, upon the outbreak of WW2, TV was shut down in the Allied nations, because of fears that it could be used as a powerful Propaganda tool by the Nazi's in the event of invasion (far more convincingly than radio could be). TV broadcasts and development continued in Nazi Germany, and regrettably Joseph Goebbels was one of the first Government ministers to appear on TV and give speeches to the nation. After the War, the USA re-established it's civilian TV network quicker than Britain or Europe, and already by the late '40s many American homes had a TV set. Television became common in British, French and German homes in the early '50s- many people in England bought a set to see the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II broadcast. By the late '50s, TV was not unusual across the USSR, Japan or the British Commonwealth nations, and by the mid-'60s it was established in China and the developing world.
