You plug it into your HDTV input and into your PS3. Both the PS3 and the HDTV may have settings needing adjustment. Many devices including PCs Laptops, and even Photo Frames also have outputs like the PS3 to connect to a HDTV and connecting two devices with outputs will not work.

The PS3 end of the cable is always a HDMI plug and the other side goes to the TV. If you have a HDTV with a spot for HDMI input you purchase a HDMI Cable with a HDMI plug on both sides and use that to connect the HDTV. Some older HDTVs do not have an HDMI plug for input and instead have either S-Video or Component connections for input and then you purchase a PS3 S-Video or Component Cable to match what you need for your HDTV. The PS3 cable which has a HDMI for the PS3 side connects to the HD inputs on the side or back of your HDTV with the component or S-Video plugs. None of these connections can be made to a standard TV for that you need the A/V cable that came with the PS3. The standard cable can also be used on a HDTV until you purchase an optional cable.

There are settings on the PS3 and my Sony HDTV also had a sync that I had to turn on. Of course you need a HDMI cable between the HDTV and the PS3
