Swimming has been going on for many thousands of years. The earliest records of swimming dates go back to the Stone Age. In 1578, a German wrote a swimming book. Competitve swimming started in Europe around 1800, using mostly breastroke. In 1873, John Arthur Trudgen introduced the trudgen to Western swimming competitions after copying the front crawl from Native Americans. Due to British dislike of splashing, Trudgen employed a scissor kick instead of front crawl's flutter kick. Swimming was part of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens. Butterfly was formed in the 1930's and was first a variant of breastroke until it was accpeted as a seperate style in 1952.

Who invented breaststroke?

Breaststroke, as a swimming technique, does not have a single inventor; rather, it evolved over time. Its origins can be traced back to ancient civilizations, but it became more formalized in the 19th century with the establishment of swimming competitions. Notably, the technique was popularized in the modern era by swimmers like Henry Taylor and others in the early 1900s. The stroke's distinctive movements and timing have made it a staple in competitive swimming ever since.
