There are a number of reasons to why Left 4 Dead won't play on Xbox 360. The first thing you can do is take the game out and make sure the back of the disc is completely mark less. If it has a smudge or anything on it, then clean the disc. One way to clean it is by using a disc cleaner spray and gently drying it off with a soft cloth. There are a few different ways to clean a disc.

If your game has a scratch or a circular mark going around the disc, you will most likely have to get the disc resurfaced. Which fixes scratches and laser burns.

If your disc is fine, then the problem could be your Xbox 360. If every time you close your disc tray and the screen says "Reading" then changes to "Open Tray", then that means your Xbox 360 is broke. There are a couple of tricks to make your Xbox work "temporarily", but eventually it will brake completely and you'll have to buy a new one or send it in to Microsoft.

Another problem is if you get any flashing red lights around the power button. The most famous is three red flashing lights, which is also called the "RRoD" or the "Red rings of death". There are also a few tricks to fix this problem also, but you will need a tutorial on how to do this. Which you can find possibly on this site or by searching for videos which work best.

There are more reasons for it not coming on, but I do not know them all.
