It currently doesn't have many uses, that's true. Armour, weapons and tools made with gold do not last long and rarely are more effective than ones made out of Iron. However they are useful for making powered rails, which are needed for long lengths of minecart tracks. Also minecraft is constantly expanding, so there may be more use for gold coming up.
