Wolves in minecraft can be tamed by right clicking them with 1-5 bones (or so this is from memory). They will fight monsters for you, but can be killed in combat just like you can be! Heal them with food items (Rotten flesh, steak, ect.) They can be named with name tags. They will attempt to follow you, and will instantly teleport to you if you get too far away. You can stop them from following you by right clicking them with an empty hand, which makes them sit. They will teleport back to your side if they take damage. NOTE: They will not attack creepers for you! However, ocelots or cats will scarce creepers away (But do not do physical damage). NOTE 2: Wolves also attack sheep. They will attack the player if you punch them
You cannot hunt down Herobrine on vanilla Minecraft, since he doesn't exist. He never was in the game and he never will be.
in version 1.5 and up there are wolves and if you give them bones they become your pet dog. then if you attack something the dog will attack it with you ( you can have as Meany dogs as you want.

no
There are no dogs in Minecraft, although there are wolves. Wolves are found usually in planes or forests. They spawn on grass and dirt.
It really depends on what kind of dog it is, also how it's trained. You can train dogs to hunt, but they will not do it automatically.
