There are too many variables as to why this might not connect. You need to specify what systems you are using, and what possible error message you receive when trying to connect.
You may be able to establish an Ad-Hoc connection between the Vista Desktop and XP laptop. I've never tried it, therefore google is your best friend. Search "Connect desktop to internet via Laptop)

Go in available networks list, and find your router. It should have some default name which you can find in the router's manual. When you find it, connect to the network. Then open the browser and type in the address field the default ip address (in manual). You will need default password. If you do not have manual. You can find all required information in internet.
