The newest Nikon D3000 is the best. Not only is it newest and has all these new features, but it has more megapixels and would be the same price as the other two. The Nikon D40 is great and all, but it only has 6 megapixels, and is not good in low lighting which gets REALLY annoying.
Nikon d40 is great and is plenty even as of this writing 8-5-09 http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm
In my view, the nikon d40 is not really good one. The most obvious shortcoming of the Nikon D40 camera, is the absence of an autofocus driver in the camera body. What this means, is that if autofocus is important to the way you take pictures, they you are somewhat limited in the number of lenses you can use with the D40. Only about ten percent of the available lenses for the Nikon D40 have autofocus drives built into the lenses. Needless to say, those lenses are considerably more expensive than lenses without autofocus. In addition, most SLR's in this price range, allow you to take pictures in the RAW format, and the D40 is no exception. What is a bit surprising, is that when you take pictures with the RAW and JPEG format at the same time, the D40 only uses a very basic JPEG format. For a camera in this price range I would have expected better. You can have a see. http://www.dinodirect.com/
The d60 is better. Buy this one if you can afford it. If you don't, try the d40 then. It has less features but still has great quality.
You can buy a remote for the Nikon D60 but not the Nikon D40
