Is a salt water pool better for eyes than a chlorine pool?

"Salt water" pools use electrolytic reaction to turn the mild saline content of the pool into Hypochlorous acid. When any type of chlorine is added to water it ALL makes the SAME thing: Hypochlorous acid. It does not matter if it is Sodium Hypochlorite (liquid chlorine), Tri-chlor and Di-chlor or Lithium based, Cal-hypo or even gas chlorine--it all makes Hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous acid is the active sanitizer; this is what kills algae and other harmful stuff in the water. Humans have a salt taste threshold of around 3,500 ppm. Most chlorine generators require a salt content of 2500 - 6000 ppm in the pool. The main difference is that many people, given long exposure to the chemical type chlorinated water, experience red, itchy skin, red, burning eyes, and even discoloration of their hair. Swimming in a mild saline solution is much like taking a shower in soft water. Swimming in a standard chlorinated pool leaves a feeling that the skin dries quicker upon exiting the pool. You may also feel or see a whitish residual chlorine flaking on the skin. In a salt-water pool (one with a chlorine generator) the water feels smooth and your skin feels smooth. The real downside to a salt water system is that it does change the way you do maintain water chemistry. It is very important to follow directions carefully with regard to water chemistry, especially in maintaining a proper pH balance. Too high or too low pH can relatively quickly ruin a vinyl liner. It really is simply a matter of keeping up with the water chemistry and not letting the pH get too high before trying to adjust it. Overall, the water chemistry does get easier, but there is a small learning curve.

The salt in a salt water pool is NaCl, or sodium chloride. There is still chlorine in the pool of a salt water pool, but at much lower amounts and other chemicals are missing, so yes, it is easier on your hair, eyes, and skin. A: hummm, what other chemicals( in the above answer)are missing? You still have a chlorine pool - it is just fed differently. With a salt system it is manufactured in the pool at the salt system equip. The other way is that you add is manually. There is salt in your chlorine only not at the levels of a salt system supplied pool. The big difference is that you add a special type of slat to the pool - tha in turn is passed thru the generator and chlorine comes out at the pool. PLEASE PEOPLE, READ UP ON THE FACTS OF A SALT SYSTEM POOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your hair is only compromised because of the other chemicals - pH and total alkalinity and possibly copper content in the water make-up. If the water is not balanced properly you will have hair problems especially fair haired people. k

There is a common misconception about "Salt Water" pools. There isn't much difference from that to putting liquid chlorine or tablets in. There is still Chlorine in your pool.

The process in a salt pool works like this. As the water passes through the cell electrolysis breaks apart the salt in the water into it's basic components, sodium and chloride. The chlorine gas produced is that does the work of sanitizing the water. During that process the two elements re-bond into salt and the process starts over.

Typically there is a lower average level of chlorine but it's still just chlorine. That lower average may help to reduce the harmful effect that chlorine can have but it is still present.
