Use stabilized chlorine only so long as stabilizer level (cyanuric acid level) in pool is within the recommended range of 50-80ppm.
Sunscreen and granular chlorine mixed in the water or a bucket should not be a problem but if you get granular chlorine on your skin make sure you wash it off quickly or you can end getting a chemical burn (much worse than a sunburn)
You should always maintain "normal" chlorine. Shocking a pool consists of adding a large dose of pure liquid chlorine. This kills any algae (and othe rmicro-organisms). The chlorine is not stabilized, and will disspate within a day or so.
After you straighten the fracture
Sure you can use liquid chlorine and walk around the pool. You can use granular chlorine directly into the pool. If it doesn't disolve before it gets to the bottom you should brush it around so it won't stain. Never add pucks/tabs directly to the pool OR THE SKIMMER. (BAD FOR THE EQUIPMENT) They will sink to the bottom and stain.
Should chlorine tablets be used in place of stabilizer chlorine tablets so the cyanuric acid don't get to high?
pH and sanitizer should be checked daily in a perfect world...at least 2-3 times a week at minimum. TA every week, CH weekly to monthly, depending on the hardness of your fill water. CYA weekly to monthly, depending on whether you use a stabilized chlorine source or an unstabilized chlorine source such as a salt water chlorine generator or bleach/liquid chlorine with periodic stabilizer additions. How frequently you need to check CYA also depends on whether you ave a non backwashing filter (cartridge and some DE filters) or a backwashing one (sand and some DE).
