To get from Long Island to Manhattan, you typically cross the East River. Depending on your specific starting point on Long Island, you might also cross the Long Island Sound or the Jamaica Bay if you're coming from areas further east. The East River separates Manhattan from the borough of Queens, which is part of Long Island.

The East River. Manhattan is separated from Brooklyn and Queens by the East River, which is not a true river, but a tidal strait. It connects to the ocean on both sides: it flows south from the bay known as the Long Island Sound, down the east side of Manhattan and the west side of Queens and Brooklyn (Queens and Brooklyn take up the western end of Long Island) and into the Atlantic Ocean at New York Harbor.
The George Washington Bridge traverses the Hudson River. It connects New Jersey to Upper Manhattan.
