Aid groups have been distributing bottled water, water purification tablets, and water purification equipment in Haiti. They are also attempting to establish mobile purification units. These units can swiftly convert contaminated water into clean, drinkable water that people can transport in plastic jugs. However, identifying sources of water has been a challenge for rescue organizations. Although most of the wells in Haiti's villages are still in working order, communities in the mountains whose water supplies were fed by streams have had their water supplies contaminated by landslides. And even though the island of Haiti is surrounded by ocean water, desalinization processes are tedious and costly. Publicity generated by recent events has provided Haitians with increased financial resources to address urgent issues of poverty and lack of clean water that existed long before the 2010 earthquake.
