The city of Fiume (Rijeka in Croatian) was briefly an independent city-state in the 1920s, after the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio staged a military occupation of the town. Then it became part of Italy and after World War II part of Yugoslavia. Since 1992 it has been part of Croatia.
