You have a suction side leak of some sort that must be found. You may not see signs of water since that side of the pump is not under pressure.

Possible sources: At the pump:

Pump lid o-ring bad or old.

Loose pump lid.

Loose in and out fittings at the pump pot. - can be caused by running the pump dry for a period of time.

Bad pump seal - seals do not last for years.

At the skimmer(s) or Plumbing between the pump and the skimmer. Could be a cracked 90 degree elbow. Could be at the base of certain type of skimmers - usually called

"black bottom skimmers" because of the material used in the construction of the skimmer which is usually made up of two or three parts. Could be a fitting that was not glued or has come unglued. Could be cracked fittings or pipe due to tree roots or ground movement. Most of the latter plumbing problems have to be found by pressure testing of those lines or thru leak detection devices.

You might want to do a "bucket test". That is where you fill a bucket with water, place it in the pool on the top step, adjust the water in the bucket to the same level as the pool water and mark both inside and outside the bucket at water levels. Note both inside and outside bucket levels should be the same location. If, after 24 hrs, the water in the pool has dropped more than the water in the bucket then you have a leak in the pool. You may then have to call a leak detection service to locate since they are hard to find. If it is a significant leak - the sooner you call for help the better.
