It’s really quite amazing how a town that was once a small provincial backwater has turned into one of today’s hottest vacation spots. Located on the Mediterranean Sea in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region of France, St. Tropez might be the most famous seaside resort in the entire world. It takes a lot to stand out on the French Riviera, where some of the world’s most popular beaches are found, and St. Tropez manages it nicely. It offers the ultimate in luxury; it has to, because if anyplace could be described as a playground for the rich and famous, St. Tropez can.

St. Tropez’s permanent population is only about 5,500. In some places this would equate to secluded coastline and a relaxing, quiet atmosphere, but in the summertime St. Tropez’s population increases tenfold. During peak season, don’t come here seeking solitude. St. Tropez’s vacationers come here to see and be seen.

Arts and Entertainment

Some of the biggest stars of stage and screen journey to this stretch of coast aboard private jets or luxurious yachts, and professional entertainers definitely demand the utmost in entertainment. St. Tropez is known for its world-class beach clubs, where sun and sand are enjoyed in the most opulent surroundings possible. There are beachside bars, and there are extravagant shows.

Shopping is always a popular pastime in St. Tropez. The waterfront is packed with boutiques catering to vacationers, but prices here often reflect the potential celebrity status of St. Tropez’s visitors. If you head a few blocks inland to less elite real estate you’ll find the price tags to be much more modest. You’ll also find some historical sites, like the Chateau la Moutte or the Musee Naval in the nearby 17th century citadel. The Musee tells the story of St. Tropez’s important role in the French Resistance during WWII.

Food and Drink

St. Tropez’s nightclubs are also top-notch. Some of them, like the Voile Rouge, are as ritzy as any in Paris itself. You may spot a movie star or two, but be prepared for pricey drinks at this sort of place. Pampelonne Beach holds numerous bars and restaurants, where you can enjoy food and drink without leaving sight of the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean.
