But the truth is there is nothing wrong with this gun and no reason for the bolt recall just make sure to keep your bolt stop screw tight and you will be just fine it seems someone lost this screw pulled the bolt back and hit themselves in the face then sued sears and this is why they issued the recall. So as long as you keep this screw tight you will be just fine and wont hit yourself in the face with the bolt.

Your gun was made 1948 /49 By Sears High Standard there has been a lot of wild rummors flying around about these guns There is nothing wrong with bolts on any of these guns NONE OF THEM... Its the bolt stop screw . This is the screw on right side of the receiver . this is the screw that you remove so you can take the bolt out of the gun . If this screw is not put back in or is lost there nothing to keep the bolt in the gun when cycling the action between shots . and you can accedently pull the bolt out and hit your self in the face . so Sears recalled them. Just make sure that the bolt stop screw is present and tight . These are excellent guns and fine shooters you just have to take care of them like any gun. I am a gunsmith with over 35 years experience and own these guns repaired these gun s Have dealt with hundreds of these guns fired thousands of rounds through them including many of the recalled ones all of these guns 583 1 to 583 25 have the same flaw the bolt stop screw as dose the H&R 348 349 351 120 and 121 wich are related to the sears gun. all of the Sears guns are strong safe and very good hunters.The recall by Sears Is baseless and any of these guns in good condition are worth more than a $50 gift certificate from Sears . .So If you want to get rid of your old freind for$50 Sears fuuny money shame on you.

The JC HIGGINS MODEL 583.13 was made by High Standard as its model 10. They have only shooter value (no collector interest). But be careful. Many of the Sears High Standard bolt action shotguns were recalled for safety considerations in the late 1990's. The Early models of this gun of wich 583 13 is part of was actually made by H&R (Harrington & Richardson ) for High Standard . Sears owned all of High Standards Rifle and shotgun production in thouse days . and had bought the rights to the old H&R gun on wich your gun was based as part of the Deal H&R made all of the early models for Sears /high Standard 583 1 to 583 13 the safety issue involves the bolt stop screw .just make sure that the screw is present and in good condition . I have a bolt action 6 shot 16ga. I paid $65 for it at a pawn shop. It has seen moderate use and remains a well functioning, useable gun. I have seen them in pristine condition for $100 at the most. It really depends on the model such as 583 1 to 583 25 were what are refered to a the Sears model 10 these guns espcially one 583 1 to 583 13 in good or better cond are twice what the later series 583 14 to 583 25 wich on average of 100.bucks However if your JC Higgins is 585 1100 583 1101 or 583 1102 the much improved Sears model 11 they will fetch more 125 bucks or more I would also like to add that sears has enacted a voluntary recall on all the JC Hggis 12 and 16 gauge bolt action shotguns. It seems that the pin that keeps the bolt from flying out can loosen and fall off. Thus when the shooter fires the gun, he's hit with the bolt HARD. They will give you a 50 dollar giftcard for sending them the bolt of the gun. Thus rendering the gun inoperable. You can keep everything else.
