You will need a special gunsmiths tool which looks like the ramrod only with an auger-type screw on the end. Insert it into the bore and attempt to screw the auger into the soft lead ball and, using plenty of GunSlick or WD-40, attempt pull it out. In severe cases it may have to be drilled out with a power drill. Spend a few bucks - let a gunsmith do it so you won't ruin the piece.

Who sells 54 cal pellets?

I assume you are looking for round balls for a 54 calibre muzzle-loader. Hornady make 530 and 535 pure lead swaged round balls. They should be available (at least on special order) from any seller who deals in Hornady products. You can also order online, although lead is heavy to ship - search for "Hornady round ball".

How does a new muzzle loader work?

A new muzzleloader operates by loading a projectile, typically a lead ball or conical bullet, along with black powder or a suitable substitute, from the open end of the barrel (the muzzle). The shooter then uses a ramrod to push the projectile down to the breech, ensuring a tight fit. To ignite the powder, a primer or ignition system, such as a percussion cap or electronic ignition, is used. Once the trigger is pulled, the ignition ignites the powder, creating gas pressure that propels the projectile out of the barrel.

What kind of ammunition was used in muskets?

Muskets were muzzle loading firearms- MOST with smooth bores. They used gunpowder poured own the barrel, and a lead ball that was pushed down the barrel with a ramrod. RIFLED muskets might use a round lead ball wrapped in a greased cloth patch, or a lead Minie Ball- but still required powder to be poured down the barrel. The powder was sometimes wrapped in thin paper tubes (cartridges) that could be bitten open, and powder dumped down the barrel. Check Wikipedia for the term Minie Ball for more information.

How do you load a riffle?

In the case of a muzzle loader, you wouldfirst swab the bore with a dry patch, then fire a test shot by leaving the bore unloaded and charging the pan on a flintlock or placing a cap on the nipple in the case of a cap lock and firing to see that the flash hole is clear. Again swab the bore, then pour your measured powder charge (varies by type of gun and caliber) down the barrel, followed by a lead ball with a cloth patch wrapped under it. The patch and ball would be rammed down the barrel and firmly seated on the powder charge. Then the pan would be charged or the nipple capped, you have a loaded rifle.

What type of ammunition can be fired from a 54 cal cougar black powder muzzle loader?

If it is a Thompson Center Cougar it is meant to fire a patched round ball or mini ball style round, (conical lead bullet aka maxi hunter, buffalo bullet etc.) With the relatively slow twist of the rifling 1:48 it will fire Sabot bullets but will not be as accurate at ranges past 125 yards, Maximum powder charge should not exceed 100 grains. All in all it is the same mechanically as the Hawken .54 and I believe you can still download the manual at the Thompson Center website.

Is a sponge ball more dense than a lead ball?

No, a lead ball is more dense than a sponge ball because lead has a higher density compared to the sponge material. Density is the measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume, so the lead ball would have more mass packed into the same volume as the sponge ball.

How can I effectively remove a stuck lead from a mechanical pencil?

To effectively remove a stuck lead from a mechanical pencil, try gently tapping the pencil on a hard surface to dislodge the lead. If that doesn't work, use a small tool like a needle or a paper clip to carefully push the lead out from the tip of the pencil. Be cautious not to damage the pencil or injure yourself while attempting to remove the stuck lead.
