For cutting exhaust pipes, the proper tool is definitely better than a sawzall.
Yes. I have replaced a lot of old leaky cast iron sewer pipe and always use a sawzall. I use regular metal cutting blades. If you don't have the specific blade handy use bimetal cutting blades.

The burning smell from the exhaust pipe may be caused from oil or transmission fluid leaking into the exhaust pipe. For example, if your turbo is failing on the car, then that can cause leakage from the manifold into the exhaust pipe. There may be other reasons, too, which other people will be better articulating.

As a jeep owner who has redone my exhaust several times. i know all about how to swap out parts and what not. the ebst way to get out your old muffler is by using a sawzall and cutting it on the tail pipe end first. then u cut the front. If you plan on redoing your exhaust more than once you will need a new tail pipe because there will not be enough pipe left to clamp anything too.the whole process takes about 45 minutes. I own a 94 yj. the front pipe is 1 and 7/8 inches in dia. and the rest is 2 1/4 (i think). Just to let you know what i did, i cut out the cat and muffler and put in a cherry bomb and ran a straight pipe to it, and it sounds really good. it cost me about $40 to do that.
