Most say 38 special on the barrel
colt police positive in .38 special
38 special unless it's a 38 S&W, then 38 S&W cartridge. should say on barrel.
Any commercial 38 special ammo can be used in a firearm marked 38 special caliber. (Remington,Federal,CCI,Fiocchi, etc.) The Colt serial number guide that I found on the internet says Colt Detective Specials with an "M"after the serial number started with the year 1975. The gun should have a shrouded extractor rod.
Most commonly used on military production ammo from the Lake City ordnance plant.
we are never told what kind of gun anyone used on the show but most likely it was a .38 caliber whch was carried by many police departments at that time.Barney Fife's "Baby" was Colt Police Positive, 4 inch barrel in .38 special caliber. It was actually a Colt Official Police... which was a slightly larger model than the Police Positive.
45 long colt ammo for modern weapons. If black powder weapon should only used re-loads with black powder
What problems withj my Colt Twenty Two Huntsman will cause it to misfeed. I have cleaned it a lot and used all different types of ammunition and still will misfeed.
Do not attempt to "fix" ammunition. Dispose of it properly. Ask your local police for help.

The 45 long colt has a longer rimmed case and is used in revolvers and rifles. The 45ACP has no rim, is shorter and is used in automatic pistols. They share the same bullets but the cases and powder charges are different. You can't interchange the two.
