I can say that the Savage/Stevens No 39 was made from 1938-1945.I cannot say if the model 39A is the same or not.
The J prefix to your serial number indicates that your marlin model 39A was made in 1952.
The caliber should be marked on the barrel near the receiver. The Model 39 is a 22LR
This is a stevens model 39A. The stevens 59A, B and C all had the takedown screw in front of the trigger guard.

No...the Marlin .22 lever action is the Model 39. An amazing history behind the model 39 and they are still made new (39a) and a great gun. 336 is a round bolt where as the 39 is a square bolt, and is also in its current 39a form a takedown model as well.
The model 39A had a cast trigger guard and the front screw holds the receiver to the stock. The models 59's all have a stamped trigger guard that is held in place with wood screws. The take-down screw is in front of the trigger guard. The model 59B has a black forend tip.
