A rifle is a firearm that is intended to be fired from the shoulder, with a long barrel for better power and accuracy than a pistol would have. Most rifles fire ammunition that is more powerful than the kind most handguns use. A rifle is a long-range weapon (often useful out to 500 meters) while handguns and shotguns are often limited to 50 meters effective range.
The name "rifle" refers to spiralling grooves cut in the barrel to make the bullet spin. A spinning bullet is stable in the air and more accurate. A long gun that does not have a rifled barrel is called a "musket" and it will not be accurate.
A rifle can be an old-fashioned black-powder rifle of the type used in the early 1800s, or it can be a modern semi-automatic battle rifle like the AR-15, or anything in between.
=====================
"rifle" can also be a verb meaning to rob (rifle a safe) or to search with intent to steal (the thief rifled through the draws).
It is the rifling in a mossberg rifle barrel.
The rifling is there to spin the bullet, which gives greater accuracy.

Ballard style rifling is a type of rifling pattern characterized by its distinctive, polygonal grooves that have a rounded cross-section. Developed in the mid-19th century by the American gunsmith Charles Ballard, this rifling design is known for improving accuracy and stability of the projectile during flight. The grooves are typically deeper and wider than traditional rifling, allowing for better grip on the bullet. Ballard rifling is often found in single-shot rifles and is appreciated for its performance in both target shooting and hunting.
There is a lot less resistance with the polygonal rifling. More over, if the polygonal rifling is chrome lined, the walls of the barrel are completely slick and offer less resistance. The projectile, the bullet, goes way faster. IDPA estimation here in the US are 10-30% faster.
When rifled, the rifling tool cuts the GROOVES. Material left between the grooves is the LANDS.
The rifling in a firearm is designed to cause the project (bullet) to spin, increase stability and accuracy.
Rifling was invented in the late 15th century. It was improved by August Kotter of Nuremberg in 1520 and by others later. There is a link below.
Direction of spin is dependent on the direction of the rifling on the inside bore of the barrel. A bullet will spin the same direction as the rifling.
The barrels of Glock pistols use a different style of rifling, known as polygonal rifling. When shooting cast bullets, this rifling will get smeared with lead (known as "leading up"), and the pistol becomes unsafe to shoot.
