A flintlock musket uses a mechanical ignition system where a piece of flint strikes a steel plate (frizzen) to create sparks that ignite priming powder in a pan. This flame then travels into the barrel to fire the main charge. In contrast, a percussion musket uses a small percussion cap placed on a nipple; when struck by the hammer, the cap detonates and ignites the main powder charge directly. Percussion systems are more reliable, faster to use, and less affected by weather conditions, which is why they eventually replaced flintlocks in the 19th century.

Need photos or more information! This is likely a M 1816 musket. My questions are is it still in it's original flintlock configuration or has it been converted to percussion(as most are) ? Also what is it's overall condition? Without this info it is impossible to give the gun a value.

I was searching for the value of an 1810 enfield percussion musket, the only information I have found was for an 1853 enfield musket valued at $700 (today).

Rifles have spiral grooves cut into the inside of the barrel, known as rifling. Muskets are smoothbore. Rifling causes the bullet to spin in flight, permitting accuracy at long ranges. Also slower to load.
