Caliber refers to the size of the cartridge a gun fires. Indirectly, it speaks to the particular cartridge that the Gun is meant to use. There are several guns that are made in more than one caliber- A Model xyz pistol might be made in 9mm Parabellum, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. Incidentally, caliber, when speaking of a rifle or handgun, refers to how wide the inside of the barrel is, in 100ths of an inch. So a .357 caliber uses a bullet that is 357/100ths of an inch wide. Guns developed in Europe generally used the metric system instead- a 9mm uses a bullet 9mm wide.
