The following is a list of safety precautions to consider when using a chisel:

• The number one rule of chisel safety is to keep them sharp. A dull chisel is a dangerous chisel, as it will require more effort to push the chisel through the stock.
• Always clamp the work securely in a vise or to the bench top.
• Never hold the work with one hand while chiseling with the other.
• Always cut with the blade pointing away from your body and keep your hands behind the cutting edge.

Use sandpaper to break the sharp machined edges on new chisels to prevent cutting yourself while holding the chisel.
