Cockerill Stahl 16 gauge shotguns were manufactured primarily in the mid-20th century, with production generally occurring from the 1950s to the 1970s. These shotguns were known for their quality craftsmanship and were produced in Belgium. The specific years can vary based on the individual model and any custom orders made during that time.
Wester Field did not make guns, they sold guns manufactured by Marlin, Winchester, Hi Standard, and others through the 1970's.
This goes back to the beginning of the auto 5 production in 1903. John Cockerill was a British Industrialist whose company supplied high quality steel to Fabrique Nationale (FN) which was the maker of the A-5. The Cockerill name was first used on Browning barrels stamped "cockerill steel". The steel was a very strong quality that met the proofing requirements of guns that were shooting smokeless powder. Eventually the Cockerill name was dropped from the barrels and "special steel" was used instead. The FN guns that were not sold to Browning in the US, uses the barrel stamp of "acier special" which means special steel in the French language.
The first guns were crude small cannon. Best indications are that they originated in China, about 1100 AD- roughly 1000 years ago.

Like any other product, guns are manufactured to be sold. Buyers can be private citizens, business entities, or governments.
