Guns were in North America long before the US existed. Firearms came across the ocean with settlers and explorers in the 1600's. Flintlocks (invented in France in 1608) were widely and commonly used in Europe by the 1630's, so it is safe to assume that with the arrival of Europeans, flintlocks were in tow.
